Battle starts for senator seats

Twenty one candidates will be vying for six senatorial seats in Jersey's government.

Thirteen islanders are seeking their first seat in the States while three current senators hope to be re-elected. Five deputies want to become senators.

The States Assembly, the island's decision-making body, includes 12 senators (elected for six years) and 29 deputies (elected for three years).

Senators will be elected in the ballot on 15 October.

All but one of the candidates is male.

The States also includes 12 connetables (heads of parishes who are elected for three years) and the nomination meetings for those posts takes place on Wednesday night.
