Inflation-busting wages claimed

Jersey currency
Economists have advised the States to tighten its policies

Teachers, nurses and manual workers in Jersey have asked for a pay rise above the rate of inflation.

The claims are all higher than the 3.2% being offered by the States.

Manual workers want an increase of 7%, nurses have asked for 6.2% and teachers submitted a claim for a 5.05% rise.

The government has said it is important to control spending.

Civil servants, police and the prison service have accepted the 3.2% offer.

Manual workers also want their working week reduced by an hour.

Meanwhile, the States has been advised by an independent fiscal panel that inflation could be triggered by a wage prices spiral which is linked to the increased cost of living in the island.

The panel of three UK economists said Jersey needed to tighten its policies and not plan any extra spending.
