Tomato export body to close down

Jersey grown tomatoes
Rising fuel costs have hit growers

A Jersey company which markets tomatoes is to stop trading as the export of the crops comes to an end.

The Jersey Produce Marketing Organisation (JPMO), set up by growers and merchants nearly 40 years ago, will close at the end of the year.

Tomatoes will no longer be exported from the island because there is no longer any profit to be made.

JPMO director William Church blamed greater competition and increased fuel costs for heating greenhouses.
