Deputy's GST call over uniforms

There are calls to remove Jersey's Goods and Services Tax (GST) from school uniforms.

St Helier Deputy Shona Pitman wants GST - which was introduced in May adding 3% to all prices in Jersey - abolished altogether.

She has already made a proposal asking for healthy foods to be exempt.

Deputy Pitman is now asking for school uniforms to also be exempt. She said parents can spend up to £160 per child on uniforms.

GST was introduced because the government will receive less tax from the finance industry after it introduced a zero-rate corporation tax to keep it competitive.

Her proposal will now be debated by the States.
