Inquiry call for incinerator plan

Rubbish tip
The incinerator at Bellozanne was due to have been replaced this year

A Jersey constable has called for a public inquiry into plans to build a new incinerator.

Planning permission was given to build a new waste-to-energy plant at La Collette in October last year.

St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft said many islanders oppose the project and the States should withhold final approval until after an inquiry.

But the Minister responsible, Deputy Guy de Faye, said a further delay could put the entire project at risk.

Air quality

A public enquiry would cost an estimated £100,000.

The £75m plant at La Collette would replace the ageing Bellozanne incinerator, which was due to be replaced this year.

It is expected to improve air quality, generate electricity for about 8,000 homes and have an active life of up to 30 years.

Mr Crowcroft said he would prefer to see other measures brought in now to improve the way the island deals with its waste.
