Radio presenter's organs donated

John Uphoff
Tributes to John Uphoff can be left on BBC Jersey's website

Three people are to receive organs donated by BBC Radio Jersey presenter John Uphoff who died last week.

He died in Southampton General Hospital at the age of 46 after suffering from meningitis, encephalitis and listerial blood poisoning.

His two kidneys and liver are to be transplanted to three patients.

Staff in the hospital's transplant unit said that they hoped the gesture would help more people decide to also become organ donors.

Donation wishes

The organ transplant co-ordinator at Southampton hospital, Trish Collins, said although it was a sad time, anything that got people talking about organ donation was a good thing.

She said: "When people hear about how John has changed the lives of so many people - not just the three recipients, but also their families - this is giving people the opportunity to talk about donation.

"The most important thing we have to say to people is to make your wishes known because we have to ask the families left behind. If they don't know what that wish was, then it's very difficult for people to make that decision at such a critical time."

John Uphoff's funeral is to be held at the St Helier Methodist Centre in Halkett Place at 1330 BST on 15 August.

Tributes to him and messages for his widow, Jan, can be left on the BBC Jersey website, or in a book of condolence which can be signed in BBC Radio Jersey's reception area in Parade Road.
