Jersey restarts holiday adverts

Police investigations into child abuse are expected to take years

Jersey has decided to restart its advertising campaign as a holiday destination.

TV advertising was stopped in March following the investigation into abuse at a former children's home.

Economic Development Minister Philip Ozouf said the timing was now "right" to restart advertising.

The island had 729,000 visitors last year spending an estimated 222m, and tourist chiefs want to hit the same figures this year.

Mr Ozouf said: "The timing is right for us to now go back in to the market place and to re-energize interest in the island subsequent to the intensive media interest in the island in late February.

"We have given the investigative process an absolute priority, and will continue to do so.

"However, I have a duty to ensure business levels and confidence in our island as a holiday destination is re-established for the 2008 season and beyond."

He said he was optimistic that the island's tourism business would recover, with new services from Leeds, Luton and Liverpool.

A three-week advertising campaign costing 400,000 will start immediately and 60,000 is being spent on a direct mail and email campaign.

The police are expecting their investigation into child abuse in Jersey to last for several years.

Officers remain at the site of former children's home Haut de La Garenne, but a large proportion of the work is taking place at police headquarters where witness statements are still coming in.
