Island visit for top race cyclist

Champion cyclist Bernard Hinault
Hinault described Jersey as a beautiful island

Jersey could play host to two stages of a major French cycle race.

It follows a visit to the island by Bernard Hinault, a man considered to be one of the most successful bike racers in recent history.

A five-time winner of the Tour de France, Hinault is now involved with organising the Tour de Bretagne.

Jersey staged an opening time trial last year in St Helier and race organisers are considering coming back to the island in 2010.

Hinault looked at a course for another stage in the Gorey area which could be included.

The 53-year-old Frenchman told BBC News Jersey was a beautiful island with some lovely roads for cycling.

Despite causing long traffic tailbacks in the town last April, Jersey Tourism described the prestigious race as a huge success which had helped to promote the island.
