Jail charity delays island visit

Greenfields
The review team is expected to visit Greenfields

A prison reform charity has put back the date of its visit to Jersey.

Representatives from the Howard League for Penal Reform were due to arrive in Jersey on Monday.

It said it needed more time to prepare for its review into the care of young offenders and it will now be travelling to the island on 11 May for three days.

The review members are expected to visit the Greenfields Centre for young offenders and the juvenile wing of La Moye Prison.

The Howard League was invited by the former Health Minister, Senator Stuart Syvret, to review care services for Jersey's young offenders following concerns about the existing system.

But when Senator Syvret was sacked from his post the invitation was honoured by his successor Senator Ben Shenton.

The review team will examine the way Jersey looks after young offenders in the prison system and it will make recommendations for improvements.

Members of the team hope to speak to the police and Jersey's chief probation officer.
