Jersey's new income support benefits scheme has been introduced.
The scheme replaces the parish welfare system and provides payments based on a person's individual needs.
Under the new scheme some people, mainly pensioners, will get payments four weeks in advance. Others will get them weekly.
Social Security Minister Paul Routier said it was a major change to the island's benefits system which would help the people who needed it most.
Single application
Income Support has replaced many of the island's benefits which were paid through States departments as well as the Parish Welfare system.
The States said: "They have been combined into a single scheme designed to ensure that help is given to people who need it, using a single application process that is accessible, fair and effective.
"The new scheme will provide support towards the costs of housing, living, medical needs and child care. Carers will also receive support.
"The amount of benefit received will depend on the household income."
People can access the scheme from the Social Security Department, as well as Parish Halls.
Specially trained staff at the Social Security Department are available to answer any questions claimants might have.
They can also give advice to people being paid income support because of unemployment looking for a job.
Minister Routier says the £60m a year the States budgeted on benefits under the old scheme was expected to stay about the same under the new welfare system.
