Text service for bus passengers
Mobile phone
The service aims to deliver real-time information for buses
Passengers in Jersey should soon be able to use mobile phones to find out if their bus is running on time.

The Text My Bus service uses mobile technology to tell passengers how long they will have to wait.

Prototypes can tell a passenger when the bus should arrive, but the system for informing people when it will arrive has yet to be finalised.

The Transport Department said it wants a 90% effectiveness rate before the scheme goes live.

Each of the island's 680 bus stops has a unique reference number painted on the road for bus passengers who want to use the text service.

It had been hoped the service would have been in operation by the end of last year, but it has been delayed by technical problems.

Transport director Caroline Anderson said it was important to make sure accurate information was given to passengers.
