Prison numbers concern minister
La Moye Prison

The minister in charge of the prison in Jersey is concerned by the number of inmates being held at HMP La Moye.

Home Affairs Minister Wendy Kinnard is worried the island has a higher number of prisoners compared with similar-sized European jurisdictions.

She said alternative punishments like a community involvement scheme could be introduced to ease pressure on La Moye.

A report by HM Inspector of Prisons in July 2005 stated the prison had 172 inmates, with capacity for 184.

HMP La Moye is the only prison in the island, holding men, women, young adults and juveniles charged or convicted across a wide range of offences.
