States approves benefit changes
A new income support system for Jersey has been officially approved to come into force next year.

States members passed all the regulations proposed by the Social Security Minister on Wednesday.

The new income support scheme will replace the Parish welfare system - where applicants could be asked to fill in as many as 14 different forms.

The unified scheme, which is to come into force on 28 January 2008, is meant to simplify the process for people.

The new scheme operates on the same budget, but with a shift in finances meant to give the most to the island's lowest earners.

States members approved the regulations for the law on Thursday and a provision for special emergency payments in case of unforeseen costs such as moving or funeral expenses.
