Meeting over French nuclear plant

Three anti-nuclear groups have opposed the plant
A date has been set for a public meeting for residents to question the French authorities on a new nuclear plant at Flamanville in Normandy.

Jean-Francois Le Grand, President of the Conseil General in the La Manche area, will attend the 21 June meeting.

A third reactor has been approved at the plant about 30 miles (48km) from the Channel Islands.

Jersey's chief minister said the States has formerly objected to the scheme over safety concerns.

The European Pressurised water Reactor (EPR) is expected to start in 2012.

Jersey Chief Minister Frank Walker said: "The French authorities know we have some unanswered questions on safety issues and we have asked them to discuss these with us during their visit.

"The safety of Islanders is our key concern."

Three anti-nuclear groups, including Greenpeace, are taking legal action in France in an attempt to stop the development.
