Start of island-wide smoking ban
Ashtray
Tobacco firms claim the ban could cost the island millions of pounds
A complete ban on smoking in enclosed public places around Jersey has come into force.

From Tuesday, anyone caught smoking in pubs, clubs and restaurants, or businesses failing to enforce the law, could face a fine of up to £5,000.

The ban was approved by Jersey States in November. A similar ban was introduced in Guernsey in July.

Various places where people stay, such as some hotel rooms, hostels and the local prison are exempt.

Pub and restaurant owners will not be prosecuted for people smoking on their premises if they can prove they tried to stop them lighting up.

The island's health authorities believe around 200 islanders die each year from smoking-related illness.
