Voter numbers drop by thousands

Thousands fewer people have registered to vote in the 2008 senatorial elections in Jersey.

The number of people signed up to vote is down by 13,000. About 54,000 people registered for last year's election.

A publicity campaign was held before last year's election to encourage more people to vote.

The chairman of the Constables' Committee, Ken Vibert, said they were "very disappointed" at the response. Reminders will be sent to homes.

Voters need to be aged over 18 and have lived in the island for the past two years.

Twelve senators are elected for six-year terms as part of the States assembly's 53 elected members.
