Review 'no threat' to gun clubs
Pistol
Islanders legally own more than 11,000 firearms
Gun clubs in Jersey are not threatened by a review into gun laws provided they are acting legally, a minister says.

Revelations about levels of gun ownership have prompted concerns among politicians and the public about how firearms are licensed.

More than 11,000 firearms are legally owned by islanders.

Pistol club members say an atmosphere of hysteria had been created. Assistant Home Affairs Minister Andrew Lewis said the review would not threaten clubs.

Police have joined members of the public and politicians in expressing concerns that not all of the owners were properly vetted.

Derek Bernard, of the Jersey Pistol Club, said the review, and what he called a "huge distortion" of the facts of gun control, threatened the future of the sport.

Deputy Andrew Lewis said the review was being carried out to protect the public but would not harm legitimate gun enthusiasts who belonged to clubs.

Home Affairs Minister Wendy Kinnard is likely to face questions on the subject in the States on Tuesday.
