Jersey's former bailiff Sir Peter Crill has died at the age of 81 after suffering motor neurone disease.
Sir Peter was the island's bailiff between 1986 and 1995 and before that he was a senator and also a deputy.
As a youngster he was one of the few men who escaped from Jersey during the German occupation. He was also a keen actor and supporter of the arts.
Tributes are being paid to Sir Peter by those who worked with him in politics and the legal profession.
Pierre Horsfall, former president of Policy and Resources, said: "He was always very dignified in office, a great traditionalist.
"He was also approachable and I really enjoyed the time when he was bailiff."
Sir Peter's successor as bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache, called him a "sensitive and deeply compassionate man strongly committed to the ideas of justice and fair play".
