Drivers abandon rank picket plan

About 1,000 people signed a petition against the rank's closure
Jersey's taxi drivers' plan to picket the Broad Street taxi rank on Monday have been called off, after a meeting between taxi drivers and politicians.

Taxi drivers had been concerned at plans to move the rank temporarily.

They were worried the rank may not have been returned once regeneration work, due to start on Monday, was completed.

Work has now been delayed by a week while the Environment and Public Services Committee and drivers agree a long-term solution for the rank.

The changes are an attempt to make the area more pedestrian-friendly. About £200,000 is being spent on new lighting, seating, bins and trees and the work is expected to take five months to complete.

The politician in charge, Senator Philip Ozouf, said Friday's meeting was "constructive".
