Overnight Isle of Man GP cover will continue

Overnight GP cover on the Isle of Man will continue despite fears it would be axed, the health minister has said.

Proposals to stop the midnight to 0800 BST cover by the Manx Emergency Doctor Service (MEDS) was one of a number of cost-saving measures being considered.

Instead, doctors are being asked to accept a reduction in payments for other sessions run by MEDS.

David Anderson told Tynwald the option would provide "significant savings without reducing the service".

The overnight service is seen in some quarters as being extremely expensive and having a low take-up rate.

But GPs and Manx residents made it clear they were against any move to remove the emergency cover.

This action will ensure the continuation of the MEDS night service for the future
David Anderson, health minister

Mr Anderson said the Department of Health had carefully considered proposals made by the MEDS clinical lead.

Officials believe that a "reduction in remuneration for certain MEDS sessions was the best way to protect the interests of patients while achieving savings", he added.

"Revised rates of payments to take effect from July 1st 2010 have been conveyed to the MEDS GPs.

"This action will ensure the continuation of the MEDS night service for the future."

Mr Anderson said it was unfortunate that the suggestion to axe the service had been reported as fait accompli before the department had made a decision.

"Such speculation only served to cause unnecessary alarm and distress for the general public," he added.
