Suspicious acts 'eyed by cameras'

CCTV
Cameras can detect speeding cars and zoom in

New cameras, which are programmed to detect "out of the ordinary" behaviour, are being used on the Isle of Man.

The CCTV system is able to zoom in on gangs of people, speeding cars and fights that break out near the North Quay end of Ridgeway Street.

Douglas Council is introducing the technology following the redevelopment of the area into a sports facility.

Council leader David Christian said the system is "incredibly sophisticated" and would help combat crime.

"If a car was going at 18mph in a 20mph zone, for example it would not react, but then say if it was speeding then it would detect that and the cameras would zoom in so the registration plate could be read.

"It reacts to out of ordinary behaviour."
