Alert over bogus job offer letter

A warning has been issued about an attempt at identity theft or advance fraud fee by the Manx Financial Supervision Commission (FSC).

Members of the public have received correspondence offering employment by the purported Sheraton Hotels Isle of Man UK, the commission said.

They are asked to complete a visa application type form and pay an advance application processing fee.

The names used in the scam are made up but the addresses used are real.

Tempt victims

The commission added that the businesses mentioned in the correspondence were not companies incorporated in the Isle of Man, or registered business names.

It had been unable to establish any genuine presence on the Isle of Man of Sheraton Hotels Isle of Man UK, Starwood Hotels Incorperated or UK Travels Agency.

Under the circumstances the Financial Supervision Commission said it felt that the correspondence was being issued to tempt the recipient into becoming the victim of an advance fee fraud

It advised anyone receiving correspondence matching the above description not to respond to it and those who had should consider contacting their local police fraud unit.
