Fatal crash road to be made safer

Plans are being discussed to introduce safety measures at the spot where a woman was knocked over and killed on the Isle of Man less than a week ago.

Drusilla Hamm, 38, an accountant, was struck in New Castletown Road, near Mount Murray, on Wednesday morning.

Braddan commissioner Kate Beecoft said the authority was considering a number of different options to make sure the road was made safer.

A footbridge and re-routing buses are some of the ideas being mooted.

Ms Hamm, who had cerebral palsy, "lived life to the full" and was described as "an inspiration" to all those who knew her.

Ideas of how to make the road safer have been discussed for some time, Ms Beecoft said.

"It is awful if it takes a tragedy to get something done," she added.

A pelican crossing had been considered but traffic experts had said this could prove more dangerous, especially for children.

"There was concern that the children might stop looking when the green man shows, but the fog could obscure the light and with it being a fast piece of road it could result in more accidents," she added.
