A series of structural surveys are to be carried out on an Isle of Man pier to help gather information for plans to redevelop a harbour area.

Divers for the Department of Transport will start examining Alfred Pier in Port St Mary and drilling boreholes into the seabed from Monday.

A topographical survey of the whole harbour area will also be carried out at the same time.

The proposed harbour improvement scheme will include a marina.

The outcome of the surveys will provide some of the essential information required to work up the initial development proposals for Port St Mary harbour.

The department intends to issue these proposals for public consultation in Spring 2010.
