Ferry firm introduces smoking ban

Manannan vessel
Mannan is being refitted ready to operate in early 2009

Smokers can no longer light up on fast craft trips between the Isle of Man and Liverpool, a ferry boss has revealed.

The Steam Packet Company is banning smoking on its Snaefell craft when it resumes service on 27 March.

Chief Executive Mark Woodward said it was important for the comfort of non-smokers, given the relatively limited outside deck area.

The ban will not apply to the firm's larger Ben-my-Chree ferry, which sails between Douglas and Heysham.

Smokers will also be banned on Manannan, a new vessel being readied by the company to replace Snaefell in May.

"We are sure that the majority of passengers will welcome this move and hope that all passengers will assist with its implementation," said Mr Woodward.
