Thick fog hits Manx ferry sailing

The Ben-My-Chree ferry was diverted to Heysham

Thick fog has forced an Isle of Man ferry service to Birkenhead to be diverted to a harbour in Lancashire.

The Steam Packet said the Ben-my-Chree ferry berthed at Heysham as a result of adverse weather conditions in the River Mersey area.

Foot passengers were transferred by coach between Liverpool and Heysham after the river was closed to shipping on Saturday.

The return sailing to the Isle of Man from was due to leave at 1630 GMT.

A Liverpool Ports Authority spokesman confirmed shipping manoeuvres on the Manchester Ship Canal and at Garston and Liverpool docks had been affected by dense fog.
