An illegal pitbull-type dog that was imported onto the Isle of Man has been put down.

The dog had been brought to the island from Northern Ireland in contravention of the Wild Animals Act.

It was taken into the custody of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry after it was advertised as needing a new home.

An appropriate home in the Republic of Ireland could not be found while pitbull-type dogs are banned in the UK.

The UK's Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 bans the breeding and sale or exchange of four kinds of dog including pitbull terriers.
