The flu vaccinations are free for some people

People living in the Isle of Man who are eligible for free flu vaccinations are being urged to take up the offer.

Manx Department of Health and Social Security (DHSS) said "no-one should be complacent about flu" as it contributes to thousands of deaths a year

As a result the DHSS is hoping to have at least 75% of over 65-year-olds immunised by the end of December.

Anyone who qualifies for the free flu jab should contact their doctors' surgery, a DHSS spokesman said.

Although anyone can get flu, it is more serious for older people and those with certain medical conditions such as heart or chest complaints, diabetes, kidney or liver problems.

Free flu immunisations are also being offered to all those who work in close contact with poultry.

The DHSS said this is a precautionary measure to reduce the risk of poultry workers getting human and bird flu at the same time as this situation may create a new pandemic flu virus.

'Constantly changing'

DHSS health and social care workers identified as caring for vulnerable groups are also being offered free vaccinations.

Dr Parameswaran Kishore, Director of Public Health, said: "No-one should be complacent about flu.

"It is responsible for contributing to thousands of deaths each year, even in years when there is no epidemic."

Public Health Nurse Pam Kermode added: "The flu virus is constantly changing and the vaccine also changes each year so people who had the jab last year still need to make an appointment".

Anyone who has flu symptoms is advised to stay at home, dispose of tissues in the bin and wash hands frequently.

It is also important to have adequate ventilation and to regularly drink soft beverages to prevent dehydration.

Information leaflets about flu have been distributed to GP surgeries, Libraries and Commissioners offices and advice is available from your GP, Practice Nurse, Health Visitor or District Nurse.
