Prisoner ends his hunger strike

An inmate who went on hunger strike at the Isle of Man's prison has ended his protest, officials have said.

The reason for man refusing his meals was not known. Prison authorities said he had been taking fluids and had been monitored by the healthcare team.

Officials at Jurby Prison said they did not have any cause for concern about the condition of the inmate, who began eating again on Thursday.

A spokesman said he had now settled well into the prison routines.

In May several prisoners went on hunger strike - one for ten days - in protest over a smoking ban.

Prisoners were transferred to the new £41.7m jail from the old Victoria Road prison in Douglas last month.
