Banned pitbull seized on island

A dangerous pitbull type dog has been seized on the Isle of Man after being illegally imported.

The animal, which is banned under island law, was brought in from Northern Ireland.

The dog is being looked after in kennels, but is deemed to be "dangerously aggressive" around other dogs, the government says.

A suitable home is being sought for the dog in the Irish Republic, where pitbulls are permitted with conditions.

"Pitbull terrier types of dogs are not domestic pets, they are potential killers and should no suitable home be found off the island this dog will have to be put down," a government spokesman said.

In the UK, the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 bans the breeding and sale or exchange of four kinds of dog including pitbull terriers.
