Farmers thank island for support

It took a week to create the slogan on the hillside at East Baldwin

A Manx hillside has been daubed with giant letters thanking islanders for eating local produce.

The phrase "Thanks for Choosing Manx" was painted on a field at East Baldwin.

The National Farmers' Union suggested the idea as part of a Manx promotional scheme with the Isle of Man Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

A total of 250 gallons of paint was used to create the slogan of four lines of 44m (144ft) tall letters, which is visible from the Mountain Road.

Union member and livestock farmer Graham Crowe said: "I was approached with an idea to use bales to spell out a message on a prominent field in the valley and I came up with the suggestion of using the paint that is used on sports pitches to set out logos.

"It's a way of thanking those people who, as purchasers of local produce, are a vital part of our industry."

Isle of Man Agriculture Minister, Phil Gawne said: "It is great to see the island's farming industry coming together to show how much we value the support of our customers who buy our wonderful fresh Manx produce.

"Local sales have increased significantly over the last few years as more and more people realise just how good Manx food has become and this is an enjoyable way of celebrating the success."

The message reflects the current theme of the I Love Manx Campaign, which will have a presence at the island's two agricultural shows.

The two-day Southern Agricultural Show will be staged this weekend at Great Meadow, Castletown and the Royal Manx Agricultural Show, which celebrates its centenary anniversary this year, will be held at Staward Farm in Sulby on 8 and 9 August.
