Rare dolphin pod spotted in sea

Risso's dolphin
Rare Risso's dolphins live in the waters off the Isle of Man

A dozen rare Risso's dolphins have been sighted off the Manx coast.

According to the Manx Whale and Dolphin Watch website, the creatures were spotted three miles south-west of Dreswick Point, Langness, on Friday.

The pod was observed by members of the Manx Cetacean Survey project who were collating information on the dolphins.

Little is known about the species which can grow up to 12ft (3.6m) long. They have stocky heads without a beak and are light grey to white.

Their skin has extensive scarring on it which is a result of other Risso's dolphins who use their front teeth when playing and fighting.
