Cash controls coming into force

Anyone with more than about £7,000 will have to declare it

Anyone bringing more than 10,000 euros (£7,950) in cash to the Isle of Man must soon declare it.

New laws come into force from 1 June which will force carriers to inform Customs and Excise in writing before making trips on or off the island.

The declaration covers cash, bankers drafts and travellers cheques.

In February, officials said that plans to adopt the EU legislation would complement the island's existing anti-money laundering laws.

Declarations must be made through the post or electronically using a form from Customs at least 24 hours in advance.

There are also no currency restrictions or exchange controls, but customs officers can seize cash if they suspect it to be intended for crime, terrorism or another unlawful purpose.

EU legislation to require declaration from anyone carrying more than 10,000 euros came into force in June 2007.
