Kershaw given bail in breach case

DJ Andy Kershaw has been bailed after an adjournment in the case alleging he breached a restraining order against his former partner.

The 48-year-old from Peel on the Isle of Man is accused of breaching the order for a second time by approaching Juliette Banner last month.

The BBC Radio 3 DJ was remanded in custody after he admitted breaching his bail conditions last Thursday.

The High Bailiff's Court heard police needed more time to investigate.

It is understood Ms Banner called police after Mr Kershaw was said to have spoken to her while she with her new partner, Jim Imrie.

The Rochdale-born DJ was given a three-month suspended sentence last week for harassing Ms Banner.

He faces charges of being drunk and disorderly, in breach of a court order and in breach of a restraining order.

He was granted bail and told to observe a curfew from 1930 to 0730 GMT and not to enter licensed premises.

He was also ordered to reside with his new girlfriend, Catherine Turner, at their home in Rhencullen.

Mr Kershaw is now accused of breaching the restraining order against Ms Banner and also of breaching the curfew imposed at his previous court hearing.

Taking medication

Nigel Cordwell, defending Mr Kershaw, said: "He's been wholly cooperational with the police and the officers before court.

"He was not a large amount of time outside of his curfew period."

Mr Cordwell added that Mr Kershaw is taking medication.

High Bailiff Michael Moyle said: "I agree that the breach was not the most serious, but they are court orders and people should comply with them.

"I bear in mind that you have been in custody for a short period.

"It may get the message home to you but you have certain responsibilities if you wish to remain at liberty."

Mr Moyle told Mr Kershaw: "I am not playing games," to which he replied: "Thank you."

Speaking to reporters after today's hearing, Mr Kershaw said: "I can't really say very much, other than that I'm relieved to be out."

He thanked the prisoners he had spent the past six days with: "They were really, really kind to me and looked after me and befriended me.

"It made a week in prison as comfortable as it could be."
