A group of student police officers have completed the first Isle of Man Initial Training Course for 70 years.

The eight graduates received their certificates from Home Affairs Minister Martyn Quayle MHK at a ceremony held at the Sefton Hotel, Douglas.

Mr Quayle said that recruiting and training local people would "enhance the work of community policing".

Manx police are now looking to recruit 12 new constables to replace officers retiring in the next 12 months.

Productive career

The award for best overall student on the course went to Lee Wright.

Ch Con Mike Culverhouse said: "It was a particular pleasure to present the Mike Ward Cup to Constable Wright for his outstanding performance whilst training.

"All members of the group achieved high academic standards and developed their professional skills remarkably quickly."

The completion of the first training course signalled the start of the next recruitment campaign by Isle of Man Constabulary.
