Flu vaccine shortages hit island

Anyone ineligible should not ask to be given the flu vaccine
Most surgeries on the Isle of Man have run out of flu vaccinations, it has been revealed.

The Department of Health and Social Security (DHSS) said the Isle of Man was suffering a shortage similar to the one throughout the UK.

Doctors on the island are finding it difficult to obtain further supplies.

The vaccine is offered every autumn to the over 65s and those with chronic health problems such as chest, heart, and kidney complaints and diabetes.

The DHSS has been in contact with the Department of Health in London and is confident it will obtain further supplies, but does not know how long this will take.

In the meantime, those eligible who have an appointment to receive a flu vaccination are advised to check with their doctor's surgery before attending.

Anyone ineligible - those under 65 and in good health - should not ask to be vaccinated.

The department has pointed out that the seasonal flu vaccination does not offer any protection against bird flu.
