Clear-up after flooding on Guernsey west coast

Waves of more than 25ft crashed over Guernsey's sea walls

A clear-up operation has been taking place on Guernsey's west coast after flooding during Wednesday's high tide.

At its peak, about 0800 BST, waves of more than 25ft (8m) crashed over sea walls in places, with Cobo, Vazon and Perelle among the worst-hit areas.

Guernsey Met Office has warned of possible further problems with 32.5ft (9.9m) tides due on Wednesday at 2036 BST and 0854 BST on Thursday.

Police are asking drivers to take care along the west coast during the tides.

Guernsey's harbour authorities have urged boat owners to check their moorings and boat covers for any damage.

Police closed a stretch of road at Perelle after flooding reached almost a foot-deep.

A team from States Works was out along the coast ready to clear the roads of debris once the tide had receded.

General manager Nigel Dorey said: "The debris doesn't seem too too deep, I think the worst area we've got is here at Perelle, where there are a lot of pebbles and a lot of seaweed on the roads so that'll be our main focus."
