An additional nine sites are being set up around the coast

A recycling scheme based around Guernsey beaches has been expanded to 12 areas in the island. Bins for plastic, tins and cans were placed at alongside rubbish bins at Cobo, Grandes Rocques and Petit Bot as a trial. The bins have been set up at an additional nine sites along the coast. Public Services Deputy Minister Scott Ogier said: "The trial showed it was popular at the locations where facilities were provided." He said: "Realistically beach recycling is not going to achieve anything like the volume of materials that we currently collect through the bring banks. "From our perspective we want to maximise recycling so every bit helps, and by making it more convenient for beachgoers the scheme will make a very worthwhile contribution." Recycling officer Tina Norman-Ross said: "A trip to the beach is supposed to be a fun day out, with sun, sea, possibly a picnic and of course plenty of ice cream and cold drinks. Everyone can now enjoy all of that without having to bin their cans or plastic bottles or face the hassle of taking them home with them to recycle later. "Obviously we want people to recycle as much as possible, but is also important that only the correct items are placed in the bins. If the recyclables become contaminated they could end up going to landfill which would defeat the aim." The nine additional sites are Portelet, L'Eree, Vazon Bay, Port Soif, Ladies Bay, Pembroke, L'Ancresse, Moulin Huet and Jerbourg.
