Calls for better taxi CCTV cover

Concern over taxi driver security

Two attacks on taxi drivers in Guernsey have led to calls for better security at the main rank in St Peter Port.

The drivers federation said this would have made it easier to identify the culprits and improve safety for both drivers and passengers.

Guernsey Police said it was confident the CCTV coverage of the Weighbridge Taxi Rank was sufficient.

The current set up has two cameras on the rank, another in the nearby Truchot and two due to be fitted in the Pollet.

Mike Mauger, from the Guernsey Taxi Drivers Federation, said taxi drivers put themselves in vulnerable positions when picking up strangers late at night and they wanted to be better protected.

'Over surveillance'

He said two attacks on drivers in 2009 had brought the issue into sharp focus.

He said it had got to the point where some drivers actually avoided the rank when the pubs closed at the weekend.

Insp Tom Makins said: "I understand the taxi drivers want a fixed camera at the site.

"However, to cover it properly we need two cameras and then to have five cameras in such a small area, I think, could be over surveillance.

"I feel our current capability does capture all vehicles travelling in that area."
