Asbestos found in Castel Hospital

Castel Hospital
Part of the roof collapsed in November and samples were sent for tests

Tests have proven there is asbestos in the roof of part of Guernsey's Castel Hospital.

The Meadows Day Centre was closed after part of the ceiling collapsed last month, due to heavy rain.

There was concern that the ceiling contained asbestos so samples were sent to the UK for analysis.

The results confirmed asbestos is present and as a precaution security measures have been put in place to ensure no one enters the building.

The Health and Social Services Department is in talks about what action should be taken.

The centre has a temporary home at the Gateway Clubhouse, but arrangements are being made to move it into part of the Giffard Ward, which was closed earlier this year.
