States' decision praised by forum

Jane Northrop
Ms Northrop said she was ecstatic about the decision

A disability campaigner has praised the States of Guernsey for its decision to approve funding for a disability officer.

The post was one of three extra projects to be approved by deputies as the States Strategic Plan was passed.

Jane Northrop, the Parent Carer representative from the Disability Forum, said it was fantastic progress.

She said: "I'm ecstatic, I did doubt it would happen... it's the best decision they've made in a long time."

Ms Northrop said: "Guernsey will be a better place for it and they'll be so many people who will benefit from this.

"It is surprising how many people on the island do have some needs, somewhere in this area."

The aim of the post, for which £50,000 was earmarked, is to have a single point of contact for islanders' with a disability to gain information and advice on rights and services.
