Visit 'raised island's profile'

Lyndon Trott
Deputy Trott said his visit had broken down misconceptions

Guernsey's chief minister said he used the Labour Party conference to break down misconceptions about the island.

Deputy Lyndon Trott has returned to Guernsey from the event in Brighton and plans to attend the Conservative conference next week.

He said he met several MPs including Treasury Minister Stephen Timms who has oversight of taxation in the UK.

He said the misconceptions he cleared up ranged from the island being part of the UK to it being called a tax haven.

The definition of a tax haven varies, from places where taxes are levied at a low rate or not at all to places that do not share tax information with other jurisdictions.

'White list'

He said it was important those who had the "most influence over the development of policy" had the correct information to work with.

In April Guernsey was put on a "white list" of finance centres by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The status meant the island was recognised as being among the most compliant in the world in sharing tax information with other jurisdictions.

The Bailiwick of Guernsey is not part of the UK and is self-governing except in defence and international relations, which is the responsibility of the UK Government.
