Disability group lobbies States

An organisation which supports the needs of disabled people in Guernsey has lobbied politicians for a dedicated disability officer for the island.

Guernsey Disability Alliance (GDA) took its campaign to the steps of the States as ministers arrived for a meeting.

The organisation is seeking appointment of an officer who could liaise with all disability groups in Guernsey.

GDA said it would want anyone appointed to also identify the needs of disabled people to help them gain independence.

Shelaine Green, GDA chairperson, added: "Previously no-one has looked at the needs of disabled islanders as a group.

"We need someone to look at how many disabled people there are in the island, what their needs are, where the gaps are and how those gaps can be filled.

"It is also important to look at the implications of disability discrimination laws as Guernsey does not have any at the moment."
