Fire inquiry 'could cause strike'

A public inquiry into a dispute among Guernsey Airport firefighters could result in further strike action, an industrial disputes officer has warned.

A dispute over pay led to too few fire staff being available to cover sickness and overtime and meant some commercial flights were grounded in May.

Deputy Mary Lowe said she wanted the States to hold an independent inquiry.

Disputes officer Michael Fookes said he was concerned any legal moves by an inquiry could hit ongoing negotiations.

'Fragile relationship'

Deputy Lowe said an inquiry was needed to investigate the circumstances leading up to the industrial action, as well as looking at the way it was resolved.

She said the action taken was nothing more than a sticking plaster and it was important to have a full inquiry.

Mr Fookes said he was concerned any legal summons which could be used to call up people in such a review could have an adverse effect on the ongoing negotiations with the firefighters.

He said it could jeopardise future negotiations by undermining an already fragile relationship between the parties.

A public hearing into the disruption is due to be held in early September.

After staging the review, the Scrutiny Committee will file a report to the States.
