Employment laws review is delayed

A review of Guernsey's employment laws has been delayed because of limited resources, the Commerce and Employment Department says.

It was hoped a public consultation could be held this year.

Equality campaigners have criticised the move, saying some workers needed extra legal protection.

Commerce and Employment said its current resources meant completing a consultation on the planned minimum wage had taken priority.

The Guernsey Disability Alliance said that anti-discrimination employment legislation was needed because bullying in the workplace was a growing problem for disabled people.

Commerce and Employment said said it received complaints of that nature but the numbers were fairly low.

It added that even though statutory controls were not currently in place in the Bailiwick, it always encouraged employers to follow good examples set elsewhere.
