Call for fire services to team up

There are calls for Guernsey's fire service to team up with airport crews

Guernsey's Institute of Directors (IOD) is calling for airport fire crews and the island's fire service to team up.

The call follows a dispute over pay by fire crews who provide cover at the airport which led to some flights being grounded on Monday and Tuesday.

At the moment the two services are separate entities.

The IOD said the events at the airport and the States' inability to resolve the dispute sooner had threatened Guernsey's reputation and economy.

Anne Ewing, who chairs the IOD, said: "We actually have been quite appalled really at how the issue has been managed.

"One possible solution may be the rationalisation of the town and airport fire services, providing a combined force.

"It would strengthen the protection that they would offer to the island as a whole and it would rebuild some confidence again in the community."

No-one was available from either of the two fire services to comment.
