Swine flu surveillance increased

A strengthened swine flu surveillance system is being implemented in Guernsey, at the request of the World Health Organisation.

The Health Department said it would work with local GPs to keep a greater watch on any possible outbreak.

The States of Guernsey will also alert public health authorities in Britain of any problems with the virus locally.

There have been no reported cases on the island so far, but three people in Jersey are being tested.

A question and answer guide has been published on the States of Guernsey website describing symptoms, treatment of the illness and how to prevent infection.

The site includes advice for those who have recently returned from areas where the illness is thought to have spread.

The Department of Health has also issued face masks to all doctors' surgeries.
