Increase in flu cases at hospital

There has been a "significant upsurge" in the number of cases of a flu-like virus in a Guernsey hospital, according to the island's health department.

The virus has affected patients and staff and two wards at the Princess Elizabeth hospital are only accepting emergency admissions.

All non-urgent inpatient surgery at the hospital has been cancelled.

Visitors with flu or diarrhoea symptoms are advised to avoid the hospital but day patients are being admitted.

The Duchess of Kent residential home has also been closed to admissions until further notice, after six residents developed flu-like symptoms.

The Department for Health and Social Services said the situation at the hospital would continue to be reviewed on a daily basis, but it hoped it would re-open for admissions and non-urgent surgery on Sunday.
