Letters damaged in post box fire

Customers have been advised to use other post boxes or offices

Mail damaged in a Guernsey post box fire on Tuesday night has been identified, Guernsey Post has said.

The fire, at the Sandy Hook Late Shopper in St Sampson, is believed to have been started by a discarded cigarette.

Guernsey Post said some letters and packages suffered minor singeing, but it had now all been identified and the company was contacting customers.

Police are investigating the fire as a case of criminal damage.

Guernsey Post spokeswoman Emma Jones said: "It wasn't a serious fire and the damage to the post box was minor.

"It has been closed for cleaning and should be open again in a couple of days."

She said customers who normally use the Sandy Hook post box are advised to use the Checkers Xpress post office at L'Islet Crossroads.
