Warning of dearer Christmas trees

Christmas tree
All real Christmas trees have to be imported into Guernsey

Christmas trees could be up to 10% more expensive in Guernsey this year, some retailers have warned.

No trees are grown on the island, meaning they have to be imported - with the majority coming from northern Europe.

Garden centres have blamed the falling value of the pound against the euro, and increasing freight costs.

Some retailers predict trees could rise by as much as 20%, while others say the increase will be small.

Earslwood Garden Centre said it had pre-ordered tree supplies very early, but would still have the expense of increased freight costs.

Despite this, a spokesman told BBC News, he hoped the cost of an average 5ft to 6ft (1.5m to 1.8m) tree would not increase "significantly".

"Price can vary obviously depending on the type of trees, but I'd anticipate an average tree would be between £30 and £40," he said.
